Melvyn Wake

Melvyn Wake is the elderly and reclusive groundskeeper of Waterdeep’s City of the Dead, a man whose wrinkled face and sunken eyes tell of a lifetime spent among tombstones and whispers of the past. With a perpetual smell of damp earth and grave moss clinging to his tattered coat, he moves through the cemetery with a quiet reverence, treating the dead as if they were old friends.
Once a soldier, Melvyn now finds solace among the graves, his gait slow but deliberate, his gnarled hands still strong enough to wield a shovel or ward off grave robbers with the sharp end of his spade. He has seen strange things in the dead of night, and while he rarely speaks of them, the deep lines on his face hint at knowledge best left buried.
Though many dismiss him as just another old caretaker, those who take the time to listen find that Melvyn holds a wealth of knowledge about Waterdeep’s forgotten history, unmarked graves, and the unnatural disturbances that stir beneath the city’s soil. If something unnatural takes root in the cemetery, Melvyn Wake is often the first to know—and the first to warn those foolish enough to ignore the restless dead.
